DID YOU
KNOW?
** Halloween is a mix of ancient
Celtic practices, Catholic and
Roman religious rituals and European folk traditions that blended
together over time to create the holiday we know today. Straddling
the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity and life and
death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition.
Halloween has long been thought of as a day when the dead can
return to the earth, and ancient Celts would light bonfires and
wear costumes to ward off these roaming ghosts. The Celtic holiday
of Samhain, the Catholic Hallowmas period of All Saints' Day and
All Souls' Day and the Roman festival of Feralia all influenced
the modern holiday of Halloween.
** After being forced to state in public that the earth does not
rotate, Galileo is said to have muttered under his breath,
"But it does move."
** The 400th anniversary of the event, inspired the first official
Columbus Day holiday in the US when in 1892, President Benjamin
Harrison issued a proclamation urging Americans to mark the day.
The public responded enthusiastically, organizing school programs,
plays, and community festivities across the country.
** Yuma, Arizona has the most sun of any locale in the U.S. - it
averages sunny skies 332 days a year.
** While serving in Congress, Thomas Jefferson introduced a bill
that attempted to bar slavery from all future states admitted
to the Union, a measure that might later have prevented the U.S.
Civil War if it had not been defeated - by a single vote.
** Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy
for trick-or-treaters with Snickers as #1.
** The beluga whale is often referred to as the "sea canary"
because of the birdlike chirping sounds it makes.
** The first catcher in major league baseball history to win
the Rookie of the Year award was Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati
Reds, in 1968.

OLLIE'S
SILLIES
A man rushed into an emergency
room of a hospital and asked
an intern for a cure for hiccups. Grabbing a glass of water,
the intern quickly splashed it into the man's face.
"What did you do that for?" exclaimed the man.
"You don't have the hiccups any more, do you?" said the intern.
"No," replied the man. "My wife out in the car has them."
