DID YOU KNOW?

** Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a
Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts
that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national
thanksgiving and prayer. She was also the author of the classic
nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

** Four tablespoons of ketchup, about the amount you would
eat with an order of fries, contains the nutritional equivalent
of an entire medium tomato. (Tom says ketchup is a food group!)

** The Hawaiian Islands are the projecting tops of the biggest
mountain range in the world. Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii,
is the largest mountain on Earth - though partially submerged, it
is 4,000 feet taller than Mount Everest.

** In November, there is a stretch of warm dry weather with a
little wind and usually a bit of haze in the air. In the United
States, it is called "Indian Summer." In England, France, and
Italy, it is referred to as "St. Martin’s Summer."

** The cranberry is one of only three fruits (the others are
the blueberry and the Concord grape) that are entirely native
to North American soil, according to the Cape Cod Cranberry
Growers' Association.

** TV veteran Andy Griffith never won an Emmy for his popular
1960's TV series "The Andy Griffith Show" or for his courtroom
drama "Matlock," but comedy sidekick Don Knotts won five times
for his supporting role on "The Andy Griffith Show" as Deputy
Barney Fife. Even Frances Bavier won an Emmy for Outstanding
Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance as Aunt
Bee on the bucolic sitcom.

** Veterans Day originally began as Armistice Day, celebrating the
end of World War I on November 11, 1918. After World War II the
name was changed. It is still held on November 11 and is a day
to honor all those, dead or alive, who have served in the U.S.
armed forces during times of peace and war.

** When you have a black eye, you have a bilateral periorbital
hematoma.
