DID YOU
KNOW?
** The Christmas tree was first
decorated with lights in the
16th century. It is believed that Martin Luther, the Protestant
reformer, was the first to add lighted candles to the tree.
He was so taken with the Christmas night sky that he wished
to bring "the lights of the stars" into the home of his family.
From this, decorating the tree with ornaments, messages and
notes, and small gifts emerged in later centuries leading to
our customs today.
** Root Beer was invented in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1898 by
Edward Adolf Barq, Sr.
** The top five spices during the winter holidays in the U.S.,
based on a survey, are, in order: ground black pepper; ground
cinnamon; seasoned salt; garlic powder; and ground nutmeg.
** Most people's legs are slightly different lengths.
** Kwanzaa, which began in 1966, celebrates African American
family, community and culture. Each night, 1 or more of 7 candles
is lit and one of seven principles is discussed: unity, purpose,
self-determination, collective work, cooperative economics,
creativity and faith.
** Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first native-born American
to be sainted. She was born on August 28, 1774 in New York.
She was sainted in the Holy Year of 1975.
** A fetus in the womb can hear. Tests have shown that fetuses
respond to various sounds just as vigorously as they respond
to pressures and internal sensations.
** The name Hanukkah is taken from the Hebrew word for dedication.
The word also means education and signifies Jewish continuity. It
is known as The Festival of Lights. Many of the rituals relate to
oil, which symbolizes a miracle thousands of years ago. There was
only enough oil to burn temple lamps for 1 night, but the oil
miraculously lasted for 8 nights, which kept the temple lights
burning bright.

OLLIE'S
SILLIES
Once upon a time there was a king in Lapland
called Rudolph.
He had bright ginger hair so his people called him Rudolph the Red.
Now Rudolph the Red was bad-tempered and argued a lot. He gave
his poor wife, Gertrude the Green, a terrible time. No matter
what she said he had to argue.
One winter's day Gertrude the Green looked out of the palace
window and said, 'Oh dear, it's snowing again. You'll have
to clear the footpath before mother comes to tea.'
'Humph!' Rudolph the Red grunted. He didn't fancy shifting
snow and he didn't want Gertrude the Green's mother coming
to tea.
'That's not snow. It's rain!' he argued.
'But it's white and fluffy and drifting,' Gertrude the
Green tried to tell him.
Rudolph the Red hid behind his newspaper and snapped, 'It's rain!'
Gertrude the Green became quite angry. 'Gertrude the Green
knows snow, darling!'
'Yes,' retorted her husband. 'And Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear!'
'What a great title for a song!' Gertrude the Green exclaimed
